Yaroslav Bogdanov: The Space arms race will lead to the death of human civilization

Cosmonautics, the advanced activity of human civilization, as characterised by its founder K.E. Tsiolkovsky, is fast becoming a new arena for geopolitical confrontation. This was stated by Yaroslav Bogdanov, founder of the Institute of Contemporary International Law and GDA Group.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry named the US as the biggest threat to space security. This comment came from Beijing as a response to Washington's accusations of development and deployment of anti-satellite weapons. These statements from the Administration of the  United States concerned both China and Russia.

Responding to these claims, the Chinese foreign ministry named the United States as the main threat to space security due to the fact that it is the state that is the main driving force behind the militarization of space today. Any attempts to blame China and Russia for this are slander, the Chinese Foreign Ministry stated.

“Modern politicians often refuse to think big, guided by immediate national interests and turning a blind eye to the consequences of their decisions. Space is one of the few things that still remains outside politics and provides ground for successful international cooperation to ensure the common good for all mankind. Let me recall that "space" means peace and order in Greek. Attempts to make it a theatre of military operations contradict everything that its discoverers bequeathed to mankind” - said Yaroslav Bogdanov.

A regular working session of the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) is scheduled for June. The agenda includes issues of ensuring long-term sustainable cooperation in space exploration. In December 2023, the UNGA adopted a resolution mentioning the risks of a space arms race. The document calls on all spacefaring nations to do their utmost to counter this.

“The statements that come today from exactly the states that the UN primarily addressed, show complete disregard for the interests of mankind. These “star wars” may be added to the devastating consequences that the world faces after a pandemic, natural disasters and armed conflicts, which will lead to the destruction of the planet as a whole. Instead of using space technologies for the development of telemedicine, education, monitoring of the world’s oceans, climate change, natural resources and many other developments paramount to the existence of mankind, the world is forced to watch these states attempt to turn space into another military base,” - said Yaroslav Bogdanov.

This expert is confident that it is necessary to build up humanitarian influence, to continue raising questions at the international level about the inadmissibility of placing weapons in space, and not only to preserve but also to deepen the existing contacts between countries, which will allow for the development of cooperation in the scientific and technological spheres.
