The incident with Google's Gemini advertisement revealed the AI regulation issue
Google has confirmed that it removed an advertisement for its artificial intelligence Gemini under public pressure. The response to the storyline of the commercial was too negative.
Especially for the Olympic Games in Paris, Google launched a video where neural networks help a girl to write a letter to her idol - athlete Sydney McLaughlin. Users did not appreciate this advertising concept, accusing the company of promoting the idea that children should be taught to rely on artificial intelligence from an early age.
This Google ad incident is a clear example of how much the AI industry needs to be regulated from an ethical point. This was stated by Yaroslav Bogdanov, founder of GDA Group.
“In recent years, the development of generative neural networks has become one of the most discussed topics in technology. However, as their popularity grows, many problems - legal and ethical, among others - arise. Until a unified code is developed to guide developers of artificial intelligence, such mishaps cannot be avoided," the expert believes.
Specifically in the case of Google, users were outraged by the interference of technology in real private lives. In fact, this has been happening for a long time and everywhere, and the incident with the advertisement only emphasized what’s already a reality.
“Deepfake emotion manipulation is a common type of fraud that is already prevalent. Generative neural networks can create content that misleads users, allowing attackers to deceive their victim. The same goes for misinformation. Plausibly false audio and video content launched to large audiences is a formidable weapon in the information wars of the modern world. The ability to generate fakes calls into question the credibility of artificial intelligence in general, which can have serious consequences for the development of this industry," believes Yaroslav Bogdanov.
Society needs to actively discuss and develop standards that would take into account innovations and at the same time guarantee the protection of individual rights when using them. A unified regulation on the creation and implementation of neural networks based on artificial intelligence will help to create a safe and ethical space for their use.
“Artificial intelligence is being implemented everywhere today. Without uniform regulations, we may face cybercrime, the spread of misinformation, and the manipulation of public consciousness on a global scale. Lack of regulation can threaten data privacy and security - neural networks can use personal information without users' consent, as the legal framework for AI is also lacking. Ignoring these issues may undermine public confidence in innovative technologies, which will deprive humanity of progress," says Yaroslav Bogdanov.
